The most famous wildlife reserve in South India has a large number of wild elephants that can be safely observed on safari boats (top deck seats are booked) that ply across the Periyar Lake. Thick jungles on either side contain Leopards and even Tigers, but you need to be lucky to see them.

One of Kerala’s secrets is that by far the most beautiful backwaters lie to the south of Alleppey.

This route takes in idyllic villages such as Thottappally, Thrikkunnapuzha and the Kayamkulam Lake, where one can see a lovely fleet of Chinese Fishing Nets. Night anchoring takes place at Vallikkavu or Alumkadavu where the world famous ‘Hugging Guru’’ or Amma’s Ashram is situated. If interested you can go to visit to the Ashram in the evening.

Chowara And Kovalam Beaches

Chowara Beach
Chowara has a fine sandy beach backed by coconut palms. You can see fishermen bringing in the catch of the day and relax on deserted beaches blessed by waves of the Arabian Sea.

The popular beach resort of Kovalam is a local taxi ride away. Kovalam has three crescent shaped beaches separated by rocky outcroppings. Shallow waters stretching for hundreds of meters are ideal for swimming. The beaches have steep palm covered headlands and are lined with shops and local restaurants.
